North America-based Ramsay Postgraduate Scholars meet in New York city for a weekend of learning and fellowship.

Friday 03 March 2023: In addition to other world-leading overseas universities, Ramsay Postgraduate Scholars attend many esteemed colleges across North America, including Georgetown, Harvard, New York University, the University of British Columbia, University of Toronto, MIT, and the famed Great Books school, St John’s College, Annapolis.

On the heels of a Ramsay Scholars’ weekend in Washington, D.C. and Annapolis, Maryland in early February, our North America-based Ramsay Postgraduate Scholars met recently in Manhattan for a weekend of fellowship and learning. The weekend included an event hosted by the Australian Consulate-General in New York.

2021 New York University Ramsay Postgraduate Scholar Blaise Joseph wrote this reflection on the weekend:

On a surprisingly warm February weekend in New York City, the North America-based Ramsay Scholars met up for a time of learning and cultural development.

Beginning on Friday evening, the Scholars were generously hosted by the New York Consulate-General office on 42nd Street in the heart of Manhattan. Presentations were given from three high-ranking Australian officials based in New York, providing Scholars with a deep insight into Australia’s place in the United States and in the world.

Deputy Consul-General Karina Soltyszewski welcomed the group and gave a rundown of the Consulate and Diplomatic work done in New York and around the world; the America’s Trade Commissioner for Austrade, Rachel Howard, explained the work of Austrade in the US and the strategic business areas that Canberra are currently focussed on in the Americas; and Lina Wong, the Counsellor for Strategic Affairs at the Australian Permanent Mission to the United Nations, described the work of the Permanent Mission in the General Assembly and discussed the strategic areas of the UN that are most important to Australia given the current geo-political situation.

Ramsay Scholars then had the opportunity to ask questions of each speaker and mingle with them afterwards, while also greatly appreciating the Australian-style sausage rolls kindly provided by the Consul-General’s team.

Later in the weekend, Scholars enjoyed further cultural development in a city of world-renowned attractions. This included visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Bridge, the 9/11 Museum, and Wall Street, before returning on Sunday to their respective colleges in North America.

The weekend was a reminder of the amazing educational and cultural opportunities that have been made available to Ramsay Scholars studying in America, furthering their understanding of both Western Civilisation and Australia’s place in the world.
