Sydney, Friday 15 July 2022: The Ramsay Centre was proud to present 22 of its newly announced 31 Ramsay Postgraduate Scholars with their Scholarship Certificates at a special ceremony in Sydney this week.
The awards were presented by Ramsay Centre Chairman, the Hon John Howard OM AC, and Ramsay Centre Academic Director, Professor Diana Glenn. The names of scholars unable to attend because their overseas courses have already begun, were also read out at the ceremony.
The 2022 Ramsay Postgraduate Scholars will study at the world’s best overseas universities with funding of up to AUD$90,000 p.a. for one, two and in select cases three years of coursework and/or research.
Their study disciplines include physics, law, clinical neurosciences, theology, public policy, music, history, English literature, science, Middle Eastern Studies, maths, business, population health and international relations. Host institutions include Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, MIT, the University of Toronto, Georgetown, the Royal Academy of Music, the University of British Columbia, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Ramsay Postgraduate Scholars are selected on the basis of outstanding academic achievement, commitment to serve others, and commitment to advancing a richer and deeper understanding of our civilisation across many disciplines of knowledge and walks of life.
Professor Diana Glenn reflected that 2021, the inaugural year of the Ramsay Postgraduate Scholarship program, saw ‘wonderful community building by our scholars across continents and cities’; including events where ‘conversations had and connections formed, marked the beginning of treasured friendships and professional associations that will last a lifetime.’
She welcomed the 2022 scholars into this community, saying the second cohort marked a ‘rich new chapter’.
“We welcome 31 remarkable scholars who are eager to embody the Ramsay Scholar model of academic rigour, commitment to service and leadership, as well as wanting to advance a richer and deeper understanding of Western civilisation,” Professor Glenn said.
“We are extremely proud of you all and we join with your families and loved ones in celebrating your achievement of studying at a world-class institution overseas and advancing your knowledge and understanding in order to be intellectually brave and fearless, sharing your expertise locally and internationally.’
Addressing the scholars, Mr Howard praised their depth of talent, their level of commitment and the enormous enthusiasm that they have brought to advancing knowledge in their respective fields.
“You have already demonstrated in your studies and attainments to date a diligence in academic work, a commitment to causes and a belief that there can be no limit to the expansion of opportunity and to the expansion of the mind,” Mr Howard said.
“(Our benefactor) Paul Ramsay would be very proud of you because you fulfil in a very particular way what he had in mind when some years ago he decided to endow a large sum of money that he had accumulated in an extremely successful and ethical business career to promoting in a generic way an understanding of the history, the value and the breadth of western civilisation.”
The Ramsay Postgraduate Scholarships have been made possible through the extraordinary generosity of our founder and benefactor, the late Paul Ramsay AO. Paul Ramsay founded Ramsay Health Care, now one of the largest private hospital operators, and was also a regional television pioneer, building stations that today form the Prime Television Network.
