Washington DC, 14 February 2022: Three Ramsay Postgraduate Scholars based at the renowned US liberal arts college, St John’s College, Annapolis, have had the special opportunity to meet with Australia’s Ambassador to the US, the Hon. Arthur Sinodinos AO.
Ambassador Sinodinos hosted the three 2021 Scholars – Mark Acebo, Benjamin Crocker, and Jordan Hill – at the Australian Embassy in Washington DC. At the meeting the scholars discussed a variety of topics relating to world affairs and Australia/US relations with the Ambassador and DFAT officials.
Our St John’s College, Annapolis Ramsay Postgraduate Scholarship is worth AUD$67,000 p.a. and supports outstanding, thoughtful, imaginative young Australians to undertake the College’s famed Master of Arts in the Liberal Arts, focusing on great books of the western canon. The scholarship also supports participation in an internship in an area of interest in Washington DC.
Mark Acebo wrote the following reflection on the meeting:
“The Ramsay Scholars met with the Australian Ambassador to the United States Arthur Sinodinos and staff from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. We had an insightful conversation on a variety of topics. We discussed the new AUKUS partnership, the Russia-Ukraine crisis, COVID-19 and the increased polarisation of the US’ political climate. Despite threats by authoritarian regimes, Australia and the United States remain dedicated to maintaining a free and liberal rules-based global order. Both countries share similar values and a commitment to the democratic ideals from the Western tradition. Thank you to Embassy of Australia, United States of America and The Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation for making the event happen.”
St John’s is situated in Annapolis, an idyllic sea-side colonial city, that is the capital of Maryland and the original capital of the US. It is the third oldest college in the US, where students have been reading great books since 1937. The low-student-faculty ratio of 7:1 contributes to its number 8 ranking for “Best Classroom Experience” by Princeton Review. The Princeton Review also ranks St John’s fifth best in the country for top professors.
