Too great a focus on efficient outcomes in universities misses one of the sublime lessons of liberal education, that the most important things — the nature of the real, beauty, goodness, love, honour, justice, family, friendship, the meaning of home and work — cannot finally be quantified by any scientific or statistical measurement. That which can be quantified, however important it may seem, is usually trivial by comparison.
