Scholars meet in Berlin for Inaugural Leadership Development Workshop

Monday 07 April 2025: Approximately 35 Ramsay Postgraduate Scholars based in the UK and Europe met in Berlin last month to attend the Centre’s inaugural Leadership Development Workshop.

The Ramsay Postgraduate Leadership Development Workshop was an immersive two-and-a-half-day residential program designed to foster leadership, critical thinking and professional growth amongst current Ramsay Postgraduate Scholars.

Taking place in Berlin, Germany, from March 28-30, the workshop featured engaging sessions on leadership development, discussion of psychometric testing results, and European historical and political insights.

Scholars participated in group projects and presentations to enhance their teamwork and communication skills. They also participated in expert-led discussions, collaborative exercises and cultural immersion.

Led by Ramsay Centre CEO Dr Martin Fahy, the workshop featured sessions with academics from the University of Cambridge, and Bard College Berlin.

Other contributors included Australian Financial Review Europe Correspondent Hans van Leeuwen, acclaimed author Richard Bassett, and art historian Dr Alfred Hagemann.

Dr Hagemann who is head of the department History of the Site at Berlin’s Humboldt Forum led the scholars on an exclusive tour of the City Palace. Bard College Berlin Professor of Politics Boris Vormann led a walking tour of Berlin’s sites of political and historical significance.

Other experts imparted their wisdom on leadership development as well as geopolitical insights, Europe and the West, and European History and Politics.

2022 Ramsay Postgraduate Scholar Isabelle Napier is undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy in International Relations at the University of Oxford. She thanked the Centre for the “exceptional weekend in Berlin” describing it as an “inspiring, humbling and enlarging experience”.

“I feel very fortunate and proud to be a Ramsay Scholar and look forward to all that lies ahead for the Ramsay Centre,” she said.

2024 Ramsay Postgraduate Scholar Izaac Masters is studying a Master of Early Music at the Amsterdam University of the Arts, the Netherlands. He said he benefited enormously from the experience.

“The weekend was super fantastic. I learnt a huge amount from Martin, the speakers, and the other scholars. Hearing the vision for the Ramsay Centre was very exciting.”

Ramsay Centre CEO Dr Martin Fahy said the workshop highlighted the Centre’s commitment to cultivating Australia’s future leaders and was about partnering with our scholars to ensure they reached their potential.
