Sydney, Tuesday 25 June 2024: The Ramsay Centre is delighted to present an acclaimed and unique stage production of T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land by internationally renowned cellist David Pereira, and actor and University of Wollongong (UOW) Senior Lecturer Dr Julian Lamb.
The Waste Land is the most influential poem of the twentieth century. This collaborative production by Pereira and Lamb fuses music and spoken word to bring to life T.S. Eliot’s haunting vision of a spiritually barren post-war Europe.
Pereira and Lamb have been performing The Waste Land for over a decade, including before packed audiences in Canberra, Adelaide, Wollongong, and Hong Kong. Their performance has received glowing reviews; The Age said, ‘Julian Lamb and David Pereira bring clarity to ‘The Waste Land’, The Riotact Canberra praised ‘an utterly inspiring performance’ while it was lauded as a ‘highly accomplished performance’ by the South China Morning Post.
The performance draws out the poem’s vast array of characters as well as its rich lyrical language, all the while complemented by the rich sounds of the cello.
The music features passages of improvisation, original composition, and direct quotation from the work of some of the most important composers of the twentieth century, including Sibelius, Shostakovich, and Schoenberg.
Dr Lamb is proud to be a Senior Lecturer in the UOW BA in Western Civilisation degree program.
With thanks to another Western Civilisation degree partner, the Australian Catholic University (ACU), the production will be held on its North Sydney campus. An afternoon performance will be attended by our UOW and ACU Ramsay Scholars while an evening performance is open to the public.
